Christmas Decor and DIY

This Christmas is a very special one for my family as it is the first in our new home. Unfortunately last year our Christmas was tainted by two unpleasant incidents. On December 24th as my husband and I drove back from dropping off our escrow deposit we were told that there was a very high probability our escrow was going to fall through. As if that wasn’t enough, Christmas morning we woke up to the great surprise that our home had been vandalized and there was graffiti all over the front driveway. We knew that we needed to get out of that old neighborhood and thankfully it was in God’s plans to have us move into our new home.

When we were house hunting I fell completely head over heels for this home. One of the many reasons that I loved this home was that it had both a living room and a den, as opposed to our old house, which only had a very small living room. I knew that with an infant and eventually a toddler, I would have to have one room where my little one could go wild and another one where I could channel my inner Martha Stewart. Today I am going to share with you how I decorated my home and also some quick and inexpensive DIY’s to bring in a little Christmas cheer into your home.

DIY’s

I did four DIY’s for this season’s decorations.

  • Pillow Cases
This is the easiest way to decorate around your home. Unfortunately, it can get expensive buying pillows for every season/holiday. I decided to make two different versions of “no sew pillow cases.”

    • For one I bought an inexpensive blanket, cut it to the size of my pillows, and glued the sides with my glue gun. To add a little “extra” I decided to add a bow to the front of the pillow. The total cost for two pillows was under $5. I decided to put these in the den since that’s the room my son destroys on a daily basis. These were literally the only “decorations” I was able to put in that room without fear of them getting destroyed by my one year old.
    • The second pillowcase that I attempted to DIY was out of a white bandana. I painted a deer on one side using a stencil and I attempted to paint some Christmas trees on the other. I then just used my glue gun to glue the two bandanas together. This pillow case seemed a bit more “delicate” so I put it in the living room which we hardly use.

DIY No Sew Pillow Case

  • Snowman Wreath
    • Have you seen the beautiful snowman wreaths bouncing around Pinterest? Unfortunately I did not find many that I liked out on the market and the few that I did like were well over $50. I will probably not want the same wreath next year so I decided to make my own and not spend too much on it. I purchased two different size wreaths from the Dollar Tree, which I covered with “pine garland.” I also used the garland to attach the two pieces together. I used left over fabric from the pillowcases for the scarf and made the hat from a cardboard box which I painted black. As final touch ups I added some poinsettias and led lights to make it stand out in my front door. Everything I used for the wreath was from the Dollar Tree, minus the LED lights, but I believe they also sell some there. The total cost was under $10.

DIY Snowman Wreath

  • Coca Cola Bottle Centerpiece
    • I love sunflowers so 99% of the year the centerpiece in our dinning table is beautiful yellow sunflowers in some kind of DIY vase. For Christmas I decided to get rid of my sunflowers and embrace winter. I painted a glass Coca-Cola bottle white and got the artificial “plants” from The Dollar Tree. Its very simple but with how small our table is, I had very little real estate to play around with. Total cost was under $5. (I have many glass coca cola bottles around the house, don’t ask about my addictions lol)
  • Tomato Cage Christmas Tree
    • Our old house had a very small front yard so we could only do very little decorating. Now with a bigger front yard we have decided to buy outdoors decorations little by little since they tend to be expensive. We have several tomato cages in the backyard because my husband likes to grow fruits, vegetables, etc so I decided to make one a tree. I wrapped garland around one of the cages and a set of LED lights to make it stand out. You can find tomato cages at your local dollar store as well as the garland and lights. total cost under $5.

I had initially planned to do several DIYs with my little one but work has been hectic. I think these four DIYs will have to do for now. And now, to see the final product:

Woodland Theme Christmas Tree
These ornaments are some gorgeous colors. Bought at Hobby Lobby.
Christmas Decor and Stockings
I had to do without a fireplace. We have a stocking up for my husband, son, mom, and myself as well as one little stocking for each one of our dogs. The shelf is a DIY from the Dollar Tree which you can check out here.
Child Miniature Christmas Tree
I bought this miniature tree from Daiso for $4.00 and the ornaments and lights from Target. You can see the final product on my instagram.

Coca Cola Bottle Vase

Christmas Outdoors Decor
You can see the snowman wreath and the DIY Tomato Cage tree on the steps.
