IKEA Spisig Kitchen Hack – 5 & more in one.

Ikea Spisig DIY hack Kid's Kitchen

I have a confession to make, this IKEA kitchen hack may have been more for me than for the kids but I just couldn’t help it. I have always wanted a play kitchen, but we already had a work bench and I did not want any more “big toys” in the house. Of course, I continued to lust over the beautiful play kitchen makeovers on Pinterest. Finally, a few weeks back as I browsed the IKEA website I got the most brilliant idea. *insert light bulb moment* Why don’t I build a multi-purpose toy? A kitchen, a work bench, a restaurant, etc. Versatility was the key word for this DIY, as many uses for one toy to prevent clutter. And that is how this IKEA play kitchen hack came to life.

IKEA Spisig Play Kitchen

I know, I know you’ve seen hundreds (if not thousands) of IKEA kitchen hacks, but hold on. This one is different. Instead of using the Duktig, I chose to makeover the Spisig. Don’t quote me on this, but I think the Spisig Play Kitchen is new to the US stores. (I didn’t see many Pinterest DIY’s for it)

Why the Spisig over the iconic Duktig?

  • First off, it’s half the price of the Duktig at only $49.99. So its even more affordable.
  • It is somewhat smaller than the Duktig. This was actually a positive for me, a makeover would be easier and take up less room.
  • But what actually caught my eye is that the back is already prepped. The back of the Spisig comes with a backside chalkboard. This was a winning point; less to do and remember, I wanted versatility out of this toy.

The doin’.

I spent more time than I would like to admit browsing Pinterest. Because there aren’t many Spisig makeovers I saved anything and everything that sparked my creativity. Then I drew it up, let Nick chose the colors, and we ordered the kitchen for curbside pick up. (Tip: IKEA is supposed to release curbside pickup slots at 9pm ever night, so be ready with your order!)

While browsing the IKEA website I also found the perfect accessory for the work table: the skadis pegboard. I also picked up some hooks and I had some containers from a previous purchase that fit into the holes.

I had to cut this a little bit although I thought I had chosen the one that per my measurements would fit perfectly.

I continued to go back and forth on whether or not I wanted to keep the original stove top. The Duktig stove top is a bit thicker than the one for the Spisig. The stove top on this kitchen is basically just painted on, so it made it easy to paint over it. This gave the boys more counter space and I made a removable stove top with a few wood pieces from Michael’s and some painted popsicle sticks.

Ta Da – The Reveal

My initial idea included so much more for this kitchen, but this already took over a month to finish. Hey, I’m trying to take care of two kids, run my solo law practice, and build up my blog in the middle of a pandemic … it’s not easy. But I am in love with the final result.

The Tool Bench

The Kitchen

Lemonade Stand with our Hearth & Home Lemonade set

I used my cricut for their name and just change up the sign on the chalkboard for whatever they are playing.

The Pizzeria with Melissa & Doug Pizza Set

The Farmer’s Market (& Nico)

The Barber Shop

With our adorable Hearth and Home barber shop set and Arlen as the customer lol.

Work In Progress

And because I am obnoxious, its still a work in progress. Some projects I want to work on include:

  • a collapsible table – I think this will give the boys more counter space. Think: cooking, cash register, or as a seating area for our customers to eat on.
  • new curtains – Nick liked the blue and white curtains the kitchen came with. Although I am not a fan, I allowed them to stay because in the end its his toy haha. But maybe I can talk him into another design.
  • an awning – I think a collapsible awning on the back side would be very cute.

Let me know what you think of our makeover. I love to see these cute DIY makeovers, leave me a comment if you have any kitchen DIY’s or any other cute DIYs for kids so I can share. And let me know if you have any questions or any ideas on what else we can add.

Also, check out two wonderful ladies who inspired our IKEA kitchen hack.

Tiffanie has not one but two different makeovers on her daughter’s kitchen. She’s actually one of the first who I saw trying to use the “back” of the kitchen. You can see the full makeover on her blog at tiffanieanne.com and check her out on Instagram.

I came across Farah when I was searching for stovetop ideas. She completely upgraded the countertop to pine and used a real faucet. I would be lying if I said this didn’t cross my mind but I wasn’t sure I would be able to get the wood cut to my specific needs. She has the full makeover on her blog farahpro.com and on her Instagram.

Thanks for catching up with us!!

  1. LOVEEEEEE THIS!! You did such a great job, girl! I love it! All the little details 😍

  2. Very nice! I was debating whether I should get the SPISIG or the DUKTIG. Your post helped me to make a decision. How did you make the removable stove top so it doesn’t move around much?

    1. I hope this post helped! To be honest it does move a bit, more when my 10 month old is playing on it because he’s wild. But if you weren’t going to be switching it back and forth you can definitely use wood glue to keep it firm.
