DIY Sing Inspired Johnny The Gorilla Costume

September is here and you know what that means: it’s [almost] Halloween time!! Today I am sharing with you my son’s DIY costume for this year. This year we decided on a DIY Sing inspired Johnny the gorilla costume. Of course I could just go to the store and pick up a costume but where would the fun be in that?

This is a sponsored post in which I received free product for an honest review. All thoughts an opinions are 100% my own.

I was a bit worried I wasn’t going to know what Nick wanted to be this year. Last year he was Woody and I had thought he would be Buzz this year but he got over that very soon. Then I thought I was going to have to make him a Bus costume since that’s all he wants right now … luckily when SING was added to Netflix he got hooked on Johny the gorilla or as he calls him “Monkey.” Honestly, I was relieved because can you imagine having to make a bus out of cardboard? haha … maybe next year.

I realized we had most of the items we would need for his “Johnny” costume so it was an easy choice for us. He has jeans (the same ones we bought for last year’s costume & sort of still fit), my close friend gifted him a leather jacket for Christmas, and he was gifted Converse for his birthday. I thought about just painting his face but he’s two years old and of course it wasn’t going to happen without some crying, mess, & wrestling haha.

The Mask – “805 Masks”

Luckily browsing through Pinterest I found the awesome Etsy shop “805 Masks” ran by Sandy Darrow. She was kind enough to collaborate with me for this post. Her shop offers various masks for children, and I was so excited to have found the one for “Johny.”

The masks are handmade. The quality of them are also amazing, definitely toddler resistant. In addition to masks, the shop also offers full costumes, hair clips, finger puppets, crayon holders, and the list goes on. The characters include Trolls inspired, Peppa Pig inspired, Zootopia inspired, Moana inspired, etc. You definitely need to go check out the shop and browse at all the goodies Sandy offers. She is a great person to work with, profession and efficient. You can check more of 805 Masks on Etsy, Instagram, and Facebook.

The masks already have an amazing price, but Sandy is offering a discount code to you, my readers so you can also get your hands on awesome masks for your little ones. Head on over to 805 Masks To browse the inventory and remember to input code “BLOGSAVINGS” For 10% off your order of $20 or more.

The Shirt

The only other thing I had to make was the shirt. I was unable to find a premade one for Nick’s size so I ordered a green shirt from Amazon. Unfortunately this shirt never arrived ( which reminds me, where’s my refund?) but I was able to find this long sleeve green shirt from trusty old Target. With some scissors and yellow felt I was done.

The Final Product

This costume was definitely a lot easier than last year’s. I understand we may not all have a mini leather jacket laying around but I am definitely an advocate for using what we already have around the house. That way you are able to stay within budget while still giving your little one a creative costume.

I was unable to find a premade costume for “Johny” and love to add my personal touch to my son’s costumes so I decided why not? I’m sure in a few years he will just want to go to the store and pick out his own costumes but for the meantime I’ll enjoy it.

I also love matching costumes so my husband and I are thinking of also dressing up like other characters from the movie. You can check out other family costume ideas here on a post I wrote last year. Remember to follow us on Instagram to stay up to date with us and to check out Nick in his costume on Halloween!!

Do you know what your children’s costumes will be? Do you celebrate Halloween? If you don’t I would love to know how you go over the topic with your little ones.

XOXO – Elle.
