Product Review: Kite Shield Mosquito Repellent

I may be exaggerating but as much as I love winter, I cannot stand the sense of cabin fever I experience. Living in Southern California we don’t get very cold weather, but this year we did experience several rainstorms. Some even flooded freeways and homes near us. With that said, I couldn’t wait for the nicer climate that comes with Spring. Although not officially spring, we have been experiencing much nicer weather here, the flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping, and of course the mosquitos are biting. Apart from the itchy bites, mosquitos also carry and spread some of the world’s worst diseases such as encephalitis, yellow fever, malaria, dengue, and Zika. Today I’m giving you a quick review on the Kite Shield Mosquito Repellant.

Who is Kite?

Kite began its story on crowd funding website Indiegogo.com back in 2013. A success, the product raised over $500k. They are vigurously researching new approaches to stop the mosquitos as they say “to allow individuals to live fearlessly in their pursuit of new experiences.” You can read more about the company here.

What are the ingredients?

The repellant formula includes: lemongrass oil, thyme oil, peppermint oil, corn oil, wintergreen oil, vanillin, and isopropyl alcohol. Compared to many repellants out in the market, Kite’s does not contain Deet, which can be a potentially irritating chemical. Deet is considered safe by many. However, concerns with the chemical include irritation, neurological damage, and impairment to the nervous system (in rare cases).

Is it safe for my children and/or my pets?

As a mom of almost two years now, I find myself asking that same question about almost everything. The product is safe for children of toddler age and higher. Like anything, however, I would recommend you talk to your pediatrician before using if your child has allergies. The product has not been tested on pets.

The Final Verdict

I had two wonderful testers for this product; my son and my husband. Unfortunately, I was unable to use it because well I spend most of my days in the office and there are no mosquitos there. My husband used it as he worked in our new patio in the backyard. For him it worked, although it did require several applications for a six hour day of work. (Note: The company recommends to re-apply every two hours.) One particular thing he liked was the smell; it has a hint of vanilla and mint mixture. The day before my husband worked in the backyard without the repellant and he did note a difference to the day he actually used it.

My other little tester wore it out as he played in the front yard. Days prior to receiving the repellant my son developed little pimples like bumps on his cheeks, which I later realized were mosquito bites. Surprisingly, he did not get any new bites. The product is safe to apply on face, however, make sure you do not apply directly.

As a mom, I do not like to use products that are saturated with harsh chemicals for my son. Of course, that means that sometimes I have to compromise. Many natural products just don’t get the job done. With the Kite Mosquito Repellant, I am able to get a natural product that actually works. I would definitely recommend.

Head on over to amazon.com to get your own and follow Kite on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to hear more about their products.

  1. I’m from southern california too! (Irvine in the house!) I’ve never heard of Kite before, but seriously HATE the smell of repellents- they’re so strong! I’m looking forward to trying out this brand on our next wet vacay!

  3. This sounds great! I always hate the smell of mosquito repellants, but this one sounds like it smells really good. I also love that it doesn’t have harsh chemicals, yet still works. Great review!

    1. I was surprised about it working so well despite the harsh chemicals. It’s rare to find something like that unfortunately.
